If you are coming back home everyday and find your garage door open even though you’re sure you closed it when you left in the morning, you are probably dealing with what professional experts call a “phantom operation.”
Here are 5 main reasons why this could be happening and what you can do about it:
Safety Sensors Issues
Your garage door has safety sensors on each side of the door to prevent accidents from happening. These sensors are very sensitive if their anything in their way it could trigger the door to open, even dust or small debris can make them think there is an obstruction and open your door again and again.
Check the area around the garage door for anything that might be in the way and keep the area clear as possible, also clean the sensor lenses from any dust once a month can help to prevent this problem.
Your Neighbor’s Remote Might Be Interfering
If your garage is too close to your neighbor’s garage and you might have the same opener brand installed, it’s possible their remote control could accidentally open both doors.
Have your neighbor try using their remote on your door and see if it opens it. If it does you might need to reprogram your remote and opener and change the code it uses.
Old Garage Door Systems
Most garage doors installed before 1993 might use older safety systems that can often get out of alignment.
If you see a blinking light on your wall panel controller this might be the case and unfortunately it requires a professional help to fix.
Remote Control Issues
Sometimes a damaged remote control can cause your door to open by itself. Sometime the remote buttons get stuck and open your door without notice. In other cases low battery issue can also be the reason.
If you have an extra remote use it till you have a professional garage door technician make you a new one.
Electrical Problems
If recently you had a power surge or an electrical issue in your garage it could cause the door to act funny. If you suspect an electrical problem, it’s a good idea to have an electrician take a look at it.
